The Little Karoo: The semi-arid paleolandscape inhabited by the first modern humans”.
In southern Africa, past climate and landscape features could play a relevant role in the evolution of anatomically modern humans and their dispersal through the continental interior during the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5(-71-130 ka) and MIS 4 (~71-57 ka). Our project will shed light on the terrestrial landscape inhabited by Middle Stone Age hunter-gatherers. To reach this aim, we will conduct our research in the Little Karoo, South Africa to assess the paleo-landscape evolution during diverse climatic events (e.g., MIS 5 and MIS 4). The sedimentary record of diverse natural archives such as pan systems, dune fields, and floodplains will be studied.
