Exploring subsurface by means of a generalization of Dix’ classic time-to-depth mapping method

Jokhongir Khayrullaev

Primary goal of ongoing the research work is to develop new tools in compressional waves (P-waves) domain for exploring the subsurface by means of a generalization of Dix’ classic time-to-depth mapping method, where velocity estimation constitutes an inherent part. A fundamental idea behind the work is the generalized Dix method, recently published in de Hoop et al. 2014. As the name indicates, it represents a generalization of Dix’ classic method (Dix 1955) for interval velocity estimation and time-to-depth conversion, which has been a cornerstone in the conventional seismic data processing. Whereas the classic Dix method is based on an assumption of a 1-D subsurface, varying only in depth, the generalized method adopts the assumptions of 3-D seismic time migration. That means the subsurface properties may have a quite general variation with depth, while lateral variations are assumed to be weak or moderate.
