s-Inking the rainbow – introducing two initiatives for generating better science graphics

Grace Shephard

The adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” is wholly applicable to the (geo)sciences. Whether in publications, talks, teaching or press-releases, the use of effective graphics is paramount to progressing science and maximising cross-overs with society. However, several obstacles threaten this trajectory. A first hurdle might be where to find up-to-date science graphics that are not under copyright. The next may be through the use of rainbow colour scale like jet” (spoiler alert: the error that the rainbow introduces is quantifiable). Another is propagation of an eye-catching figure that nevertheless shows a scientifically-inaccurate or misleading process. In this lunch time talk, I will introduce two bottom-up initiatives to make and share better graphics (s-Ink.org and Scientific Colour Maps), and encourage you to be a part of them too.

Dr Grace Shephard is a Researcher at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED) at the University of Oslo. She received her PhD from the EarthByte Group at the University of Sydney.  Her research interests include plate tectonics and mantle dynamics, and has a particular interest in development of the North Atlantic and the Arctic. She received a NFR YFF grant for her project “POLARIS – the evolution of the Arctic in deep time (2021-2025).
