Morphological modelling of rivers, tidal basins, and seas

Gerard Dam

UN-IHE (Delft) / COWI (Bergen) – gedm@cowi.com

In the last decades (process-based) morphological models have become popular tools in science and engineering to simulate sediment transport and bed level changes in rivers, tidal basins, and seas. With growing computational capacity, the capabilities of these models have become large. Now it is possible to model several hundred to even thousands of years of geomorphological changes with high resolution. Modeling long-term effects of human activities, climate change and sea level rise are themes that are investigated with these kinds of models. In this presentation I will show several examples of morphological modelling, how they work, how good they are on the long term and what is possible with these models.

2nd presentation (IAS practice session) 15 minutes
