Searching for lacustrine tsunami deposits with the aid of a numerical model
A Mw ca. 5.9 earthquake occurred in 1601 CE in central Switzerland which triggered multiple subaqueous and subaerial landslides in and around Lake Lucerne. One of these subaqueous landslides triggered a tsunami which hit the city of Lucerne. While this tsunami was documented historically, physical evidence remains sparse. Using the numerical modeling software BASEMENT, we simulated the tsunami’s sediment transport. With this model as a guide, we then took 9 sediment cores in areas of interest. We link an event layer which exists in 4 of the 9 cores to the 1601 CE event. The program BASEMENT proved to be effective at simulating lacustrine tsunami sediment transport.
