Ground-Penetrating Radar: fun with rapid underground imaging!
Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) is probably the most popular geophysical tool for shallow-underground imaging. Its range of application is wide and movies even portray it, e.g., in crime- (forensics) or archaeology-related films. Though using EM-waves instead of elastic ones, GPR’s acquisition principles and processing/imaging have much similarities with seismic. But EM-waves are extremely fast and getting images with GPR is thus a dream compared to seismic! This gives us a tool which is very handy for geophysical education in wave methods and signal processing, while being applicable to various ground-imaging issues as will be illustrated.
