SUMMARY:Liviu Giosan
DESCRIPTION:Morphodynamic Foundations of Coastal Sumer \nLiviu Giosan \nThe world’s first cities and states\, in their modern definition\, developed from 6000 to 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia near the coast of the Persian Gulf\, on the combined delta of Tigris and Euphrates. Despite more than 200 years of research their emergence remains enigmatic. Here I discuss the environmental context for coastal Sumer based on recent drilling-based work in Iraq and propose a new morphodynamic theory for urbanization.

SUMMARY:Atle Rotevatn
DESCRIPTION:Deformation and slip localization in porous volcaniclastic rocks: tuff adventures in eastern Taiwan \nAtle Rotevatn \nTaiwan features some of the highest uplift rates\, and highest erosion rates in the world. With that comes growing mountains\, rapidly incising river gorges\, highly active surface processes and related geohazads\, all of which makes this a very interesting place to any geoscientist. Eastern Taiwan also features an accreted island arc complex\, where volcanism that occurred approximately 5 million years ago has produced an absolutely awesome succession of volcaniclastic deposits knowns as the Shihtiping Tuffs. This succession has been deformed at relatively shallow burial depth during ongoing plate convergence\, and between 2015 and 2017 I had the pleasure of spending three field seasons with students from UiB and colleagues from the University of Bordeaux and the National Taiwan University in that area. In the years that have followed\, more people have become involved\, and in this talk I will talk about the deformation features we see in the Shihtiping Tuffs\, and what they can teach us about deformation mechanisms and controls on slip localization in such rocks.

SUMMARY:Natacha Fabregas
DESCRIPTION:Ongoing IODP Expedition 401 \nNatacha Fabregas \nThis week the geolunch will host a video call with the ongoing IODP Expedition 401. In the session they will give us a tour of the JOIDES Resolution research dill ship\, and update us on some of the work that has been going on in the Gulf of Cadiz and Gibraltar Strait on the current IODP expedition 401\, where UiB PhD student Natacha Fabregas is part of the scientific crew. You can find out more about the expedition here: https://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/sitesumm.html \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81828633555
